Doha, 29/11/2022 (MAP) – Senegal qualified for the round of 16 of the World Cup 2022 by beating Ecuador 2-1 on Tuesday in the third and final round of Group A.
The African champions, who needed to win to qualify, won thanks to a penalty by Ismaila Sarr (44th), then by Kalidou Koulibali (70th). Ecuador had equalized in the meantime through Caicedo (67th).
At the end of this day, Senegal finishes at the 2nd place of the group A with 6 points, behind the Netherlands (7 pts). Ecuador (3rd/4pts) and Qatar (4th/0 pt) are eliminated.
This is the 2nd qualification in the history of Senegal for the knockout phase, after having reached the quarterfinals in 2002.
