IHF Challenge Trophy: A good takeoff for Nigeria — Atuse

Abuja , Feb. 26, 2019 (NAN) Patrick Atuse, immediate past Technical Director, Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN), on Tuesday said the Female National teams had a good take off at the ongoing International Handball Federation (IHF) Challenge Trophy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria U-18 girls defeated Togo 50-11 points to win their first match, while the U-20 lost to host Benin Republic in 28-33.

NAN also reports that the IHF organised tournament holding in Niamey, from Feb. 25 to March 3, would serve as ticket to the next phase of the world championships qualifiers.

Atuse said teams started well in the tournament, adding that their performances in the first matches had given hope to the handball family and country at large.

« I am happy with the girls because they have started well, the goal margin in the cadet category is much and even that of the junior team was a narrow loss.

« So they have given us hope to believe in them and that their chances in the tournament is very bright which is a good signal and message for Nigeria, » he said.

He advised the girls to remain focused, confident and apply team spirit as they engage other teams in all matches and at the end be the best team in the tournament.

Atuse commended the current Samuel Ocheho HFN-led board for setting the stage for good development of youth championships in the country and through participation in continental tournaments.

« This present board have been proactive since they assumed office, I give kudos to Ocheho, the president for various initiatives in taking handball to its desired place, » Atuse added.

According to him, such measure would help to restore the dwindling glory of handball in the continent.

NAN reports that the handball national U-18 girls is taking part in the cadet category, while the U-20 is participating in the junior category of nine-day IHF organised tournament. (NAN)
