Monrovia, March 18 (LINA) – The Liberian Government and the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development have signed US$20 million loan agreement to pave 65km of road linking Konia to Voinjama, a major corridor between Gbarnga in Bong County and Lofa County.
According to acting Finance Minister Augustus Flomo, road connectivity is an important part of the Pro-poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development.
Minister Flomio made the statement at the signing ceremony of the loan agreement for the Konia-Voinjama road project held at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning in Monrovia on Thursday.
He indicated that road connectivity is an integral part of human capital development.
He stated that with roads, the country can move on a fast-track to economic growth and development, because roads will boost economic activities, improve farm-to-market access, and provide the medium where people will have basic social services.
He noted that Lofa and Bong counties were once considered the ‘bread-basket’ of Liberia, meaning that most of the agricultural activities were centered around the two areas and they were able at the time to provide food for most parts of Liberia
Minister Flomo pointed out that road accessibility also provides better framework for agricultural linkages, trade and commerce to prop economic growth.
He expressed thanks to the Kuwaiti Fund, saying « in times of need, those who come to you are your friends, » adding also that the Fund has helped the Liberian government to take strides that will help the country achieve its Pro-Poor Agenda.
Flomo said the government of Liberia was glad for the gesture and expressed optimism for more interventions from the bilateral ties between the two countries for Liberia’s development.
