MONROVIA, May 16 (LINA) – As part of efforts in mediating the June 7 planned protest, the United Nations, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Union Liaison Office, have reiterated the need for inclusive, transparent and continued dialogue among Liberians.
The international partners opined that such dialogue should obtain without denying Article 17 of the Liberian Constitution.
Article 17 of the constitution guarantees the rights of all Liberians to lawfully, peacefully and orderly assemble and associate.
In a joint statement issued in Monrovia recently, the three bodies emphasized that any prolonged political disagreement in Liberia will undermine peace as well as worsen the prospects for improved socio-economic development.
According to the statement, the organizations renewed their continued support to the process of the dialogue as well as supporting the people and government of Liberia in their endeavors for a peaceful, stable and prospective country.
“We commend Liberians, the Council of Patriots, and other stakeholders for the comprehensive dialogue as an indication of the willingness of all parties to continue to work in other to reach amicable and encompassing political agreement.
On 2019, National Unification Day, President George Manneh Weah had a meeting with representatives of the so-called “Council of Patriots,” planners of a protest they say is slated for June 7, including peace stakeholders, ECOWAS, UN, among others, to dialogue.
