All are involved in the effort to curb insanitary conditions – Minister

By Samuel Dodoo, GNA
Accra, July 12, GNA – Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, has called on stakeholders to deliberate and come out with appropriate strategies to help solve challenges confronting the sanitation sector.
She said the prevailing insanitary conditions in many areas of the country was not the best, hence the need for all to commit to commit themselves into improving the situation so as to meet the road-map of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah made the call when she opened a three-day workshop on this year’s Mid-Year Review of the Ministry held to deliberate on achievements made and to seek the support of stakeholders in the sector.
The workshop is being attended by representatives of the Ghana Water Company Limited, Community Water and sanitation Agencies, consultants of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project, and directors of the Ministry.
Some of the issues they would discuss include sanitation financing, access to land, creation of waste management departments in all assemblies, enforcement of laws, human resource capacity building, water safety and quality, monitoring, review of existing guidelines and implementation of reforms.
Madam Dapaah said the choice of Ghana for the African Continental Free Trade Agreement demanded stringent measures to give the metropolis a new look as many distinguished delegations are expected in the country.
She urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce laws against open urination and defecation, the rearing of animals within their jurisdictions, and issuance of notices to property owners to ensure cleanliness at their premises.
“The development of Ghana is a shared responsibility for all citizens, hence the need for all to join hands to keep our environment clean,” the Minister said.
