MONROVIA, July 21 (LINA) – “Since our founding in 1847 as the first independent country in Africa, we have often sailed on rough seas and through contrary winds, and faced many dangers, slid and fell. But through it all, with His steady hands on the wheel, God has always brought our ship of State to calm waters and safe harbors. To God be the glory!” President George Weah has said.
He was speaking Sunday during the Thanksgiving and Intercessory Service at the Liberty Christian Center church in Johnsonville, Montserrado County, in continuation of events to manifest the observance of Liberia’s 172nd Independence Anniversary.
The Liberian leader said all citizens should see it vital to pray for Liberia’s progress as well as for one another to honor God’s word, which says “love your neighbor as you love yourself,” and that it is through harmony that the nation can continue to be peaceful and strong despite the diversity of views or backgrounds.
“Together we are stronger. I wish all Liberians a happy Independence Day in advance. May God bless Mama Liberia; May God bless us all,” said the President.
“We’ve gathered here today to give thanks and praises to the Almighty God for the birth of our dear nation, Liberia. As men and women of faith, we bless His holy name and thank Him for His guidance and protection that He has given through our deeds for many years,” Dr. Weah said.
Meanwhile, the guest preacher at the thanksgiving church service, Rev. Fr. Michael Tuan Sie, urged Liberians to respect authorities because “leaders come from God.”
Apparently overwhelmed by the many (rather harsh) disagreements in the media, including social platforms, the preacher said “it’s time [we], Liberians, move this nation forward.”
Fr. Sie called on the President to reach out to people who disagree with government’s policies so as to find a common ground in the supreme interest of Liberia.
The people have the right to freely but honestly express themselves on national issues, and your duty is to accomplish your development goals, the preacher said to President Weah.
Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor and other senior government officials were also in attendance as well as thousands of other citizens, as national Christian leaders offered prayers for Liberia, the authorities, and all within the borders of the country.
Glorious songs to God Almighty were sung in appreciation, particular, for the peace in Liberia.
Last Friday, the President and other officials also attended similar service at the Black Jinnah Mosque in Jacob Town, Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
Other activities to befit this year’s July 26 celebrations include dedication by President Weah of several big development projects such as the China-aided Ministerial Complex; the new terminal at the Roberts International Airport; the official Independence Day ceremony at SKD Sports Stadium; and a children’s party.
