MONROVIA, March 20 (LINA) – The Liberian Senate has reiterated its commitment for free and fair elections in Liberia.
According to the President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, Albert Chie, the Upper House has taken keen interest in the processes leading the General and Presidential polls slated for October 10, 2023.
Pro-tempore Chie made the disclosure Friday at the Capitol Hill offices when the Senate closed for the first break of the sixth session of the 54th Legislature.
He indicated that the first break of the Legislature will last until in the middle of the Month of May 2023.
Senator Chie stressed that the Senate has been engaging the National Elections Commission (NEC) through public hearings most of the times and by committee engagements as often to ensure that the elections are transparent.
He noted that the election process is everybody’s business, so all stakeholders should actively get involved with electoral matters to ensure that peace and stability are maintained during and after the polls.
Pro-tempore Chie stated that as the final result of the National Census come out in May, the Legislature will do the necessary requirements of the Liberian Constitution to set up the threshold for new electoral districts.
He described the performance of the current government as 85 percent despite the prevailing situation confronting the nation.
He maintained that the government is building roads, providing free education at public universities across the country and doing many more development initiatives.
Chie pointed out that Liberia’s economic stability is far better than other countries in the West African sub-region, adding that every Liberian should be encouraged to go and register to vote as the process begins from March 20, 2023 and ends April 9, 2023 for the first phase.
