Damang (W/R), July 4, GNA-Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) has donated 900 mono desks to the Ghana Education Service for distribution to 14 basic schools in the host communities.

Six desktop computers with accessories, two multi-purpose printers and a set of office furniture were also given to the Ghana Education Service (GES) directorate at Bogoso in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality to support the performance of their duty.

The items, worth over GH¢258,750.00, were funded by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) to enhance teaching and learning.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries at Damang, the Community Affairs Manager, Mr Abdel-Razak Yakubu, said GH¢21.9 million was invested in educational projects and programmes in the host communities since 2002.

He said the Foundation would, this year, spend GH¢12.6 million on education, agriculture, water, sanitation and infrastructural development in the catchment area.

« For 2021, 40 per cent of our annual budget would be channelled into educational support in the nine host communities of AGL, » Mr Yakubu said.

The Community Affairs Manager announced that five-unit and three-unit classroom blocks would be constructed at Subri and Enimelkrom respectively, adding that the GFGF was committed to the socio-economic development of the communities.

Receiving the items, Madam Mary Vida Koffie, Municipal Education Director of Prestea Huni-Valley, said, « in some communities, school children sit on the bare floor; how can such children compete with those in Greater Accra Region, who sit in a well-furnished classroom to write the same Basic Education Certificate Examination. For us, we are privileged that Gold Fields have realised our plight and because of the love they have for the education they have gone all out to support us ».

She assured GFGF that they would take good care of the facilities for the future benefit of the pupils.

The Abusuapanin of Damang Traditional Area, Nana Kweku Kwenyin, on behalf of the communities, thanked GFGF for the support.

He advised the pupils to study and aim high since education was a vital key to their future.
