Luanda – Of the 3.1 million kilometers of cultivable area, Angola uses only 331,285 kilometers, or 10.37 percent, according to the final report of the Agricultural and Livestock Census (RAPP).

The final report of the RAPP, the first after independence, presented Tuesday in Luanda by the National Statistics Institute (INE), identified the existence of over 3 million farmers across the country and with the provinces of Uige and Zaire the richest soils.

The report was presented in three modules – « family farming and fishing farms », « community farming » and « business farming, fishing and aquaculture farms ».

Community and village census results

In this module, data were collected from 2019 to 2020, surveyed 2.3 million, and households in Malanje, Cabinda, Bié, Huambo stand out in agro-livestock farming, with Cuando Cubango having the fewest households farming.

In the process of data collection, the families that practice agricultural, livestock and fishing activities, in the 23,651 villages selected, the cultivation of corn, followed by cassava, sweet potato and beans stand out as the most produced crops in the country.

Results of family farming and fishing

In the field of livestock exploration, explored in 20 villages, 1.4 million farmers were counted, where the production of chicken leads the livestock production, followed by goats, pigs, cattle, and sheep.

In the aquaculture activity, 8,263 farmers were found who produce mostly in ponds (91%) and lagoons, with a predominance in the production of native tilapia and catfish.

Results of the agro-livestock, fish and aquaculture business holdings

The RAPP report, in the field of entrepreneurial farming, fishing and aquaculture, identified 5 887 entrepreneurs based mostly in Benguela and Huambo, but the province of Cuanza Sul has the highest average per hectare – 540 ha of exploration.

Here, the data indicate that the male gender dominates with ages ranging from 54 to 64 years old, where nationals own 98% of the agribusinesses around the country.

With regard to access to credit, the RAPP, in 2021, found that 3.6 percent of entrepreneurs had access to credit and about 37 percent obtained technical assistance.

In the occasion, the Secretary of State for the Economy, Ivan dos Santos, considered the RAPP as a fundamental instrument to support the diversification of the national economy.

The agro-livestock and fisheries census, designated RAPP 2019-202, is the first to be carried out in Angola after independence, with the objective of updating the agro-livestock and fisheries statistical information system in order to support policies, plans and programs under development in the country.

The census co-organised by the ministries of Economy and Planning, and Agriculture and Forestry counted on the partnership of the World Bank (WB) in technical assistance valued at 60,000 dollars, as well as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
