Addis Ababa, 29/11/2023 (MAP) – Morocco called, here Wednesday, for global, integrated and multidimensional approaches, based on peace, security and development, to address the multiple challenges facing the African continent.
Faced with the multiple challenges of the African continent, it is essential to « adopt global, integrated and multidimensional approaches, based on peace, security and development aimed at consolidating peace, strengthening security and promoting prosperous and sustainable development for African citizens as promoted by the Tangier Declaration of October 2022, » the Moroccan delegation said at a meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) on “post-conflict reconstruction and development activities in Africa”.
To address the complex underlying factors of conflicts and tensions in Africa, Morocco called for approaches based on the nexus between peace, security and development. To this end, the Kingdom hosted the 1st African Union Policy Conference on Promoting the Peace, Security and Development Nexus, on October 25-27, 2022, in Tangier, the Moroccan delegation noted.
This conference promoted a multi-stakeholder debate in response to the growing challenges facing African economies, which are putting heavy pressure on the continent’s security and stability. It also launched a reflection, in collaboration with all the stakeholders involved, on pilot projects having a direct and concrete impact on the daily life of African populations, while respecting the territorial integrity of States, the Moroccan delegation recalled.
In this regard, the main conclusions of the AU Policy Conference led to the adoption of the Tangier Declaration on promoting the link between peace, security and development in Africa, which was unanimously approved by the member countries of the PSC and by the AU Summit during its 36th session, while institutionalizing the “Tangier Process” as a regular event on the Nexus, the Moroccan delegation underlined.
Morocco remains fully committed to favorably responding to calls from the international community to prevent conflicts, restore and consolidate peace and security in the world as well as to work alongside its African partners and sister countries to ensure lasting peace in Africa, guaranteeing the well-being and prosperity of the populations of the continent, the Moroccan delegation reiterated.
