Accra, Nov. 12, GNA -The Daasgift Quality Foundation, an NGO with support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has started training women fish mongers and dealers along the fish value chain in good financial management and book keeping.
A reasonable number of the women fishmongers and traders in the value chain lacked formal education and the business and managerial skills needed to help them run their businesses efficiently to either break even or maximize profit.
The fisheries Sector does not have adequate policy direction and action plan to help build the capacity of these women, which over the years had impacted negatively in their effective management of their daily livelihood to have good returns.
The training, with support from IFC-Canada Local Economic Development Programme, was for100 fish processors in three fishing communities: Ankrobra, Asanta and Esiama in the Ellembelle District, would enable them to overcome such literacy challenge to a large degree when knowledge acquired was effectively applied.
Mr. Emmanuel Quao, in charge of programmes at Daasgift, said the training would also enable the fish processors to manage their micro businesses efficiently and effectively to improve productivity and profitability.
It was facilitated by officers from the Non-formal Education Unit in the Ellembelle District, led by Mr. Shaibu Mohammed, the District Director of Non-Formal Education.
Mr. Quao in this regard urged the women to make good use of the investment by Daasgift and IFC-Canada Local Economic Development Programme, to enhance their writing and numeracy skills to bolster their trade in the fishing businesses.
