MONROVIA, May 31 (LINA) – President George Manneh Weah has vowed to uphold democratic tenets by engaging global institutions to support his government to achieve its development goals within an enviable time-frame.
The Liberian leader emphasized that the administration can only achieve its goals and agenda by putting into place programs that are achievable within a set time envisaged by the government.
President Weah made the pledge when he, on behalf of the government, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s Africa Governance Initiative (AGI), at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
The MOU will ensure that AGI provides capacity building and technical support to the government to develop plans that will help bridge the gap between its vision for a better future as well as its ability to implement the plans.
The Liberian Chief Executive noted that AGI’s technical support and capacity building program will provide an opportunity for the government to properly plan in the interest of the Liberian people.
He then admonished his cabinet ministers at the signing ceremony to focus on the work that lies ahead of them in order for the government to succeed.
For his part, Prime Minister Blair thanked President Weah and officials of his government for the warm welcome accorded him and his delegation and promised to work with the government to get the work of the Liberian people done.
« Whatever area that matters to you, we will work alongside you to get the job done. We have been doing this for a decade now, » Blair emphasized.
He noted that Liberia has gone through a lot, but has also enjoyed years of peace, and as such, what is important now is for the government to make the world to know that Liberia is a country that is open for investors and help.
He disclosed that his institution works with governments in about 40 African countries, in the implementation of their priorities such as jobs, health, education, infrastructure, and roads among others, adding, « We try to assist in getting the job done. »
The former British PM challenged officials of the Liberian government to formulate their own discipline and strategies at their various ministries in order to efficiently and effectively perform their duties in the implementation of the government’s agenda.
