Abuja, Jan. 31, 2023 (NAN) A Gender Rights Advocate, Mrs Member Adiguve, has called on Nigerian women to participate actively in politics.
Adiguve who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday, said that the landscape was changing and the world was no longer just a man’s game.
Adiguve who is also the Coordinator, Young Women in Politics Forum in Benue, urged women to ignite their impact in leadership.
“Research has found that the global share of women in senior management roles is increasing incrementally, with 87 per cent of global mid- market companies having one woman in a senior role today.
” We must evolve on the fronts of three recurring themes, which is confidence, growth mindset and networking,” she said.
She said that women’s political participation would result in tangible gains for democracy as well as more sustainable peace.
Adiguve said that Nigerian women are agitating that 50 per cent of political posts must be reserved for women.
She urged mainstreaming of gender into party politics at all levels, both Federal, State and Local Government Areas.
She explained that better representation by women would ensure that their voices were heard and their issues fairly recognised.
” Studies show that women legislators are more likely than men to address women’s interests.
“Representation in government affects more than just policy, it is a tool for social empowerment,” she said
According to her, women bring more diverse physical, mental and emotional experiences to everyday conversation.
Adiguve identified cultural belief systems, lack of finance, effective means of implementation of affirmative action among others, as some factors militating against women participation in politics.
She said in spite of these challenges, women must rise up, contest and support female contestants in their political career.
” Let’s us rise as Nigerian women, let us seize the political landscape, let us be partners, let us take the bull by the horn, the time to act is now,” she said.
