MONROVIA, March 7 (LINA) – Finance Minister Samuel Tweah has assured Liberians that gender mainstreaming would be reflected in the development approach of government to achieve gender balance in all sectors.

Minister Tweah stressed that Liberia has come a long way relative to gender development and hoped that the national budget for fiscal year 2019/2020 will be the most gender sensitive compared to any national budget in the history of Liberia.

The Finance minister made the statement Thursday at the launch of the Gender Responsive Planning and Budgeting (GRPB) National Coordination Unit held at the Ministry of Finance in Monrovia.

According to him, anything that government does will reflect gender balance in health, road development, planning, agriculture and education, among others.

He indicated that the establishment of GRPB is intended to set the appropriate budget to address issues relating to gender development across the country.

Minister Tweah explained that research has shown that if women are given productive technology, it would yield better results, noting that girls’ education should be a priority.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Children and Social Protection at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Lydia Mai Sherman, said the national budget is the most important economic policy instrument of government and, as such, it is a powerful tool in transforming the country to meet the needs of the poorest of the poor.

Minister Sherman asserted that GRPB is vital as the government remains committed to gender equality and women empowerment to provide better livelihood for the people.

She pointed out that the emphasis of empowerment of women and girls is a key endeavor which is affected by inequality, ranging from gender-based violence to low level participation in decision-making.

« We are also glad that a Unit has been set  up  to coordinate and ensure the implementation  of the policy which means it is not just another document to decorate the shelves  of our offices,  but rather an active document, » Sherman added.
