Winkogo (U/E), July 12, GNA – Mr Alhassan Zakaria, Lands Administration Officer at Lands Commission in the Upper East Region, has conceded that there is low public confidence due to the activities of some unscrupulous individuals parading themselves as staff of the Commission.
He said the activities of such land agents who hover around the premises of the Commission on a daily basis has dented the image of the Commission.
« When people come, they expect you to take one week to complete the document, which is not so. When they come and meet somebody outside, the person takes the money and says he can complete the document within a week and fails; and the name that comes out is the Lands Commission »
He said the Commission is working to flush out the activities of such individuals and urged members of the public to seek the services of the Commission through its Client Service Unit.
Mr Zakaria said this at Winkongo, a community in the Talensi District during a day’s sensitization meeting for residents of the area organized by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII).
Michael Henchard Okai, the Project Coordinator for GII, said the fight against corruption would bear little fruits when the citizenry are not informed of its danger and how to combat it.
Mr Okai said it is against this backdrop that the GII has embarked on a series of activities to empower the citizens to fight against perceived corruption in the land sector.
The sensitization activity brought together various community members including small-holder farmers, traditional authorities and young people to empower them to make informed decisions on their land rights, land tenure security and to strengthen them to demand transparency and hold duty bearers accountable.
