Addis Ababa, 21/02/2024 (MAP) – Morocco reiterated, on Wednesday in Addis Ababa before the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU), that the success of any peacebuilding effort requires the inclusion of socio-economic activities and the adoption of holistic and multidimensional approaches to tackle the root causes that hinder the emergence of sustainable development in Africa.

« Aware that the purely military approach has demonstrated its limitations in resolving political tensions and conflicts in Africa, Morocco takes this opportunity to recall that the success of any peacebuilding effort requires the inclusion of socio-economic activities and the adoption of holistic and multidimensional approaches to tackle the root causes that hinder the emergence of sustainable development in Africa », stressed the Moroccan delegation at a meeting of the AU PSC on « the link between peace, security and development: follow-up to the Tangiers Conference ».

During the meeting, held by videoconference and chaired by Ambassador Mohamed Arrouchi, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the AU and UNECA, the Moroccan delegation recalled that in October 2022, Morocco organized the 1st AU Policy Conference on Promoting the Peace, Security and Development Nexus, which culminated in the « Tangier Declaration,” which was unanimously approved by the PSC member states, and by the 36th AU Summit, while institutionalizing the « Tangier Process » as a regular event on the Nexus: peace, security and development.

Bringing together PSC member states, political decision-makers, practitioners and experts, this AU conference provided an opportunity to engage in a fruitful multi-stakeholder debate in response to the growing challenges facing African economies and societies, which weigh heavily on the continent’s security and stability, said the Moroccan delegation.

In this context, the delegation stressed that the AU Policy Conference on Promoting the Peace, Security and Development Nexus in Tangier is an important event endorsing reflection and resolution of the challenges of peace, security and development in Africa, and that its recommendations provide a roadmap for future action on these crucial issues.
