Abuja, May 17, 2019 (NAN) The European Commission Civil and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), has commended Christian Aid (CAID)’s prudent utilisation of funds provided for disaster management and mitigation in Benue State, North central Nigeria.
Mr Nicholas Govert, the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), officer in ECHO regional office in Senegal, stated this at a meeting with members of the Disaster Mitigation and Management Platform (DMMP), in Makurdi, North central Nigeria.
The DMMP members consist of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), government agencies, the media, among others.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the expert was in Benue to monitor the Early Warnings and Early Response (E4E), project aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness across some states of the federation.
Govert, who also visited various communities where the project is being implemented, expressed satisfaction with the level of its implementation in Benue.
“We are here to see things for ourselves; to know if the project has impacted on the lives of the people of Benue, especially those in the communities where the project is being implemented.
“I must say that we are impressed with what we have seen. I want to commend Christian Aid for putting the funds given to them into proper use and it is clear that our donation is not a waste,” he said.
He, however, stated that further assessment on the project would come as its implementation continues.
NAN reports that the E4E project, which began in April 2018, focuses on reducing flooding disaster in Benue, Plateau and Kaduna States. It is expected to run for two years.
It is basically aimed at supporting the government and people to minimise flooding and also respond to any disaster when it occurs.
NAN also reports that communities in Benue benefiting from the project include Aila, Utogolugwu and Okokolo in Agatu Local Government Area.
Other benefiting communities include Mbadwen, Ive and Nzorov in Guma Local Government, as well as Achusa, Guido Villa and Welfare quarters in Makurdi Local Government. (NAN)
