São Filipe, 17 Jul (Inforpress) – The Vitó Project, a conservation and sustainable use of resources association, recorded, until Wednesday, 15th, the capture of at least a dozen sea turtles on several spawning beaches in the Fogo Island.
he executive director of the Vitó Project, Herculano Dinis, told Inforpress that until July 15, 10 turtles had been captured, two on the Ladrão beach, one at Fonte Bila beach, two in Campanas and one at Praieta (São Filipe), three in the municipality of Santa Catarina and one in the Mosteiros, but he believes the number may be much higher.
Herculano Dinis said that in the municipality of Mosteiros the National Police efforts resulted in the arrest of two individuals allegedly for the capture of turtles, highlighting the commitment, dedication and engagement of PN officers in implementing the new legislation on sea turtles.
According to the official last Monday the PN rescued a turtle “from the hands of criminals”, in Campanas de Baixo, at a time when the turtle was found with a stone on its head and was “practically buried”, according to the Vito Project official.
