LOC to present guidelines on health and COVID-19 to Ministry of Health

Accra – Feb 7, GNA – The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the 13th Africa Games, Accra 2023, has been tasked by the Ministry of Health to submit a guideline on health and COVID-19 protocols for next year’s games.

The LOC has selected the University of Ghana, Legon to be the Games Village for the multi-sport event and would be looking at ensuring a safe and healthy environment for the athletes and officials who would be lodging there.

These came up during an interaction between the LOC led by its Executive Chairman, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare and the Ministry of Health led by the Deputy Minister, Mahama Asei Seini.

The two bodies agreed that there was the need for them to work hand in hand in order to create feasible Health Guidelines and Protocols to be used before and during the Games for the safety of all organizers and participants.

The LOC also declared their intentions to have medical structures such as Infectious Disease Centers, Medical domes, Isolation centers, medical satellites, and Port Health centers the Games Village.

Dr. Baffour Awuah, the special advisor to the Minister of Health on Human Resources, suggested that the LOC submit a catalog of its plans and requests to the Ministry for immediate action.

In a related development, the LOC has also paid a working visit to the Ghana Tourist Authority (GTA), as part of its stakeholders’ engagement for the upcoming Games.

They discussed among others, areas of collaboration such as branding of buses, transportation, branding of tourist sites and other key areas to help generate interest and spread the vibe.

There was also mutual discussion on the creation of an African Games village where Ghanaian and African cultural items would be displayed and sold to help boost the sub-sector.

The GTA pledged their fullest support for the successful hosting of the event.
