Kumasi, April 30, GNA- Hajia Zeinab Sallaw, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), has distributed eggs, sugar and tea bags to 1,000 Muslims in the Asokore Mampong Municipality.
The gesture was to ease the economic hardship facing the people in the municipality following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and help them to observe the annual Ramadan.
Each beneficiary, mostly the vulnerable, received one crate of eggs, a box of tea bag and one cup of sugar.
Hajia Sallaw who doubles as the Ashanti Regional Treasurer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), said fasting in Ramadan was an important ritual for Muslims, but most people struggled to fast due to financial challenges.
She said the situation was compounded by the outbreak of the coronavirus, which adversely affected the livelihoods of many Zongo residents.
“This is why I decided to support such people to ease their plight in this holy month, as a member of the Zongo community”, she said.
“I belong to the Zongo community, where poverty rate is high. I know the problems that residents are facing so this is the little I can offer to assuage their struggles”, she added.
She entreated other Muslims who have the capacity to also support the needy in their own small ways, saying, “There are thousands of people out there, who virtually live on the benevolence of others.
She urged the people to continue to observe the precautionary protocols to stay safe from the virus.
“The coronavirus is real. Protect yourselves don’t be deceived by those claiming government is using the pandemic to achieve political points”, the MASLOC director cautioned.
