Tamale, March 29, GNA – Media Response, a non- governmental organization (NGO) has held a day’s workshop for journalists in Tamale to assess them on lessons learnt from workshops on migration organised for them some few years ago.
The workshop was aimed at identifying best practices and recommendations to aid and strengthen the capacity of journalists in the Northern Region to enable them design innovative projects aimed at highlighting issues of migration in the region.
It provided an interactive platform for journalists to outline some challenges they faced in reporting on migration and related issues.
The workshop formed part of a project dubbed: « Media Training and Public Sensitization of ECOWAS and Migrants’ Rights, » which was launched in May 2017 by Media Response in collaboration with Ministry of Information, Ghana News Agency, Ghana Journalists Association, Information Services department, Ghana Independent Broadcasters’ Association and Migration Media Network.
The project was funded by the European Union and ECOWAS Commission and implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Mr Salifu Saeed, Northern Regional Minister, whose speech was read on his behalf, said, issues of migration, free movement and migrants’ rights were important due to their effects on socio-economic development.
Assistant Commissioner of Immigration (ACI), Mr Edward Owusu, Northern Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service emphasized the need for the protection of rights of migrants in line with International Conventions.
ACI Owusu urged all to be patriotic and remain in their countries to contribute to their development adding those who wanted to leave should endeavour to acquire genuine documents to avoid sanctions.
