Pleebo-Fish Town US$31.8m Electricity Project To Kickoff Shortly

  17 Mars      58        Economie (20813),

PLEEBO, March 16 (LINA) – Citizens of Maryland and River Gee counties are expected to benefit from electricity shortly as efforts are well underway to roll out the Pleebo-Fish Town electricity project.

The Pleebo-Fish Town Corridor is another achievement of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) in its drive to expand and increase access to reliable and affordable electricity throughout the country.

It can be recalled that the Government of Liberia and partners in May 2019 broke ground for the electrification of the Pleebo-to-Fish Town Corridor, a component of the Liberia Energy Efficiency Access Project (LEEAP) being implemented by the an Indian firm. ALPHA TND LTD.

LEEAP is a US$31.8 million project jointly funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the European Union (EU) through the Government of Liberia.

The project, which seeks to extend the existing power lines from Pleebo in Maryland County to Fish Town inRiver Gee County, according to ALPHA TND LTD Project Manager Anil Gaur, is expected to be completed within six months.

But he expressed fear that challenges like bad weather and deplorable road conditions might prolong it to one year.

The project, he said, will not only extend the lines but connect private and public buildings, including business centers within Maryland and River Gee counties.

Mr. Gaur told the Liberia News Agency that materials required for the project such as streetlights, transformers, light poles and power cables, among others have already been imported into Liberia and are being transported into the counties through the Port of Harper.

He added that street-side clearing and pegging in the concession areas of the Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC) and the Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP) as well as the heart of Pleebo are in progress.

The initiative, according to him, will benefit about 7, 332 households in 24 communities in the two counties.

ALPHA TND LTD, he said, will install about 4,000 prepaid meters along with 15 transformers in Pleebo as the highest beneficiary of the project.

Gaur pointed out that over 200 local residents in both River Gee and Maryland counties are expected to benefit from employment directly through contracts and other services.

Meanwhile, Mr. Gaur has lauded the Maryland County local authority for the accommodation and cooperation accorded his entity.

The initiative is part of Government’s Prop-poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development under its infrastructure pillar.
