Luanda 03 June (ANGOP) – The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, Tuesday in Luanda highlighted the efforts of the national authorities in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, despite the context of economic difficulties.

The Angolan Head of State made this statement while speaking, by videoconference, at the Summit on the Protection of the World Population against the danger of the Covid-19 pandemic, which focused, in particular, on the problem of production and distribution of vaccines.

João Lourenço emphasized the commitment and dedication of the health, education and Defence and Security Forces personnel that, in an effort coordinated by the Government, are doing their best to guarantee the protection of the most vulnerable and exposed groups.

He also highlighted the excellent response of the Angolan population, which has been going to the vaccination posts.

The Statesman said that, in order to strengthen the cold and supply chains, Angola built a new central vaccine warehouse, as well as implemented a digital platform for real-time management of vaccines and vaccination material, which is already operating in six (6) provinces and is in the process of expansion to the rest of the country, ensuring support to the management of all types of COVID-19 vaccines and routine vaccination.

He also said that in the field of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the country also launched an individual electronic immunization register.

João Lourenço thanked COVAX for the 1.1 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine already received, with doses for AMC92 countries (a group of 92 low and middle income economies) expected to increase to a figure corresponding to 20% of our populations.

João Lourenço thanked COVAX for the support to the extension of the cold chain, essential to guarantee the adequate conservation of the vaccine against COVID-19.

During the event, he appealed to the countries and private donors participating in the « One World Protected Summit » to offer all possible support to this initiative, as he is aware that collective action and solidarity will contribute to overcome this enormous challenge that our populations and States are facing, given the threat to human life and the normal functioning of our social and economic structures caused by COVID-19.

The event was an initiative of the GAVI Vaccine Alliance, an entity headed by the former Portuguese Prime Minister, José Manuel Durão Barroso, and was attended by world leaders such as the United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, Heads of Government, philanthropists such as Bill Gates and other relevant personalities from the international political scene.
