Assomada, Jul 21(Inforpress) – The President of the Republic said Saturday that the judgment of the Constitutional Court (TC), which declared unconstitutional an article of the agreement signed between Cabo Verde and the United States of America, does not change his position on it.
“What the TC’s judgment says does not lead me to change my position, on the contrary, for me that judgment is clear and well-founded, people may like it or not (…). I will not comment on the judgment, but perhaps in its decision-making part, it is a judgment that I would subscribe to, without any problem and entirely.
The Head of State, who visited the North Santiago Sanitary Region today to take stock of the health situation, answered a question from journalists about the TC’s judgment in relation to SOFA.
The TC considered “unconstitutional” the article referring to the exercise of US jurisdictional powers over its military personnel for crimes they may practice in Cabo Verde, under the SOFA agreement.
The Head of State recalled that he decided to ratify that agreement after “consideration”, in fact, he clarified, that if at the time he had doubts about the unconstitutionality on the agreement, he had the possibility to request prior review by the Constitutional Court.
