WANEP-Ghana holds General Assembly meeting

Tamale, Feb 15, GNA – The Ghana Secretariat of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP- Ghana) has held its General Assembly meeting to deliberate on its policies and programmes to ensure peace and stability in the country.?
Mr Albert Yelyang, National Network Coordinator of WANEP-Ghana, speaking during the meeting in Tamale, said the current insecurity threats in the West Africa sub-region called for more collaboration between governments and institutions to ensure peace and guarantee sustainable development and growth.
Mr Yelyang announced that WANEP-Ghana had developed six major policies and programmes to help minimise conflicts and enhance peaceful coexistence in the sub-region.?
He said, « Moving forward, the secretariat has developed some guidelines, notably amongst them is to strengthen the use of early warning and improve linkages with peace actors at all levels, utilise research and partnership for peacebuilding advocacy and improve financial and institutional capacity of WANEP-Ghana. »
Hajia Alima Sagito Saeed, Board Chairperson of WANEP-Ghana, gave the assurance of the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that the sub-region experienced some level of peace through continuous engagement with necessary stakeholders and institutions.
Hajia Saeed touched on the organisation’s contribution to peaceful elections in the country, saying « the deployment of our early warning mechanisms with satellite and national situation rooms covering the entire country was able to supplement early warning data analysis and technical expertise with the National Peace Council, amongst other agencies for peaceful elections.”
She gave the assurance that the organisation would continue to monitor, analyse and report on human security threats to prevent them from degenerating into violent actions, adding « WANEP-Ghana will continue to support preventive diplomacy engagements and dialogue processes to rapidly respond to conflict situations across the country. »
Reverend Father Thaddeus Kuusah, Executive Secretary, Northern Regional Peace Council, commended WANEP- Ghana for the various initiatives being implemented to ensure peace and stability in the country.
