Morocco Sees Nuclear Actions in Favor of Africa as Strategic Priority – Ambassador

Vienna, 20/02/2024 (MAP) – In a statement during the 62nd session of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) in Vienna, Ambassador Azzeddine Farhane, Morocco’s permanent representative, emphasized that actions in the nuclear domain for the African continent hold a paramount strategic position for Morocco.

Farhane, also serving as the President of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, highlighted Morocco’s full support for the joint action plan of the CTBTO and the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE). He expressed Morocco’s commitment to bolster the plan’s implementation through the exchange of experiences and best practices with African states, solidifying the country’s dedication to South-South cooperation within the CTBTO framework.

Morocco, known for its multifaceted efforts towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Africa’s Agenda 2063, has pledged to provide training for experts from African countries. This training will focus on the civil and scientific applications of the International Monitoring System for Nuclear Tests, in collaboration with the CTBTO. Key areas of focus include tsunami warnings, nuclear and radiological accidents, and civil aviation.

Emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and South-South cooperation, Farhane underlined Morocco’s belief that enhancing the capabilities of African experts through training sessions and workshops will contribute significantly to achieving the goals of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and strengthening non-proliferation capacities on the continent.

The ambassador reminded attendees that Morocco actively participated in the negotiation process leading to the CTBT and considers the treaty an essential pillar of the international disarmament and non-proliferation system. Morocco called for universal adoption of the CTBT, aiming to eradicate nuclear tests globally and achieve comprehensive nuclear disarmament.

Reiterating a firm commitment to a balanced approach and judicious allocation of resources, Farhane detailed Morocco’s unwavering position on the CTBTO verification system. This system includes the International Monitoring System, the International Data Centre, and on-site inspections.

In conclusion, Farhane emphasized Morocco’s unwavering commitment to the CTBTO’s mission, which aims to promote global peace and nuclear non-proliferation. The country reiterated its dedication to fostering the eradication of nuclear tests, ultimately contributing to global and comprehensive nuclear disarmament.
