Bethlehem, March 6, GNA – Pupils of the Lord Our Saviour School (LSS) at Bethlehem in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, as part of the 67th Commemoration of Ghana’s Independence Day, have cleaned up communities within the area.
The exercise was aimed at ridding those communities of filth and inculcating the habit of communal labour in the youth.
These include Kakasunanka, Nmlitsakpo, Sebrepor, Bethlehem, Gbetsile, Tulaku Police Station, and some lorry terminals.
Mr Prince Selorm Mawudzro, the Principal of LSS, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that every citizen needed to recognise that the communities needed to be clean to synch with the celebration of Independence.
The school had a programme aimed at educating the children on cleanliness not only in their homes but also within their communities to ensure healthy living, he said and that the exercise should be a wake-up call to all citizens to embrace communal cleanliness.
Mr Samuel Benkron Jagri, the Environmental Officer of the Kakasunanka, Nmlitsakpo, Sebrepor, Bethlehem and Gbetsile (KAMSBEG) Zonal Council, said it was refreshing to see young people develop an interest in cleaning their communities.
Clean communities were essential in promoting good environmental practices, he said, and that the environmental officers were ready to contribute their quota to ensuring the communities were always kept clean.
Ms Kezlyn Selinam Aboagye, a final year Junior High School pupil, expressed joy in partaking in the clean-up exercise, and said it would help promote Ghana’s socio-cultural identity as far as proper sanitation practices were concerned.
He advised her peers to desist from littering their various communities and adopt proper sanitation practices to avoid illness and other environmental issues.
The Ghana News Agency observed that police officers, parents, teachers, and environmental officers joined the pupils to clean the communities.
