Mogadishu, 26/05/2023 (MAP) – The terrorist group Al-Shabab carried out an attack against a base of the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in Bulo Marer, nearly 100 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu, on Friday, ATMIS announced.

In a message posted on Twitter, the Mission said that an « Atmis base in Bulo Marer was attacked by Al-Shabab, » noting that its forces are assessing the security situation.

According to the Somali News Agency (SONNA), the Ugandan army announced that it had opened an investigation into an attack on an Atmis military base held by the Ugandan People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in Bula Marer.

Quoting UPDF spokesman Flex Kuleyigye, SONNA reported that the attack was carried out by « foreign insurgents », without giving further details.

Reports indicate that assailants, suspected of being Al-Shabab elements, attempted to storm the military base, the Somali agency detailed, noting that there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Citing local sources, SONNA noted that the town of Bula Marer has a strong presence of members of the terrorist group.
