Chinese Envoy Underscores Role Of China-Liberia Scholarship In Sustaining Ties

MONROVIA, Dec. 12 (LINA) – Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, has disclosed that the Chinese Ambassador Scholarships to Liberian students will help boost Liberia’s ARREST agenda, promote the bilateral friendship and promote mutually beneficial cooperation, and further strengthen China-Liberia strategic partnership.

The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship is a great project intended to help students complete their studies in various disciplines. Since its establishment in 2011, more than 1,000 outstanding Liberian students from various disciplines have been awarded this honor to obtain their education.

According to the Chinese Ambassador, who spoke at a local hotel in Monrovia recently, the scholarship has not only encouraged the students to study hard but has made them realize their dreams.

“I am also pleased to learn that it has enhanced their interest in learning Chinese language and culture and sown the seed of friendship between China and Liberia.

He said China-Liberia Educational Cooperation is a window of opportunity for Liberian students, since the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Liberia in 2003.

The Chinese Envoy revealed that nearly 1000 Liberian students have been sponsored by the Chinese Government to pursue degree programs through different scholarships and other programs in China, while 2,000 plus participated in short-term training programs. He added that many of the mentioned students are currently playing important roles in the development of Liberia.

He recalled that in 2008, China Changsha University of Science and Technology, in cooperation with the University of Liberia, established the Confucius institute at the UL, which has become another signature program of China- Liberia Educational Cooperation.

The Chinese diplomat added that the Confucius institute at the UL has not only attracted many students to learn Chinese language and culture but also recommended hundreds of students to local Chinese enterprises.

China-Liberia Educational Cooperation has enabled many Liberians to get more knowledge and skill as China continues to pursue high-level opening-up, China-Liberia cooperation in the education area will be more and more promising.

“In the next three years, China will continue to implement a series of educational cooperation programs such as the China -Africa universities 100 cooperation plan, China-Africa cooperation programs for STEM teacher training and the Future of Africa China Africa vocational education cooperation plan,” he noted.

According to the Ambassador, China will continue to support high- quality development of Confucius institutes in Africa.

He added: “China is willing to reach cooperation agreements on international Chinese language education with education departments of African countries and support Chinese language education in Africa through the joint opening of Chinese language subjects training of Chinese language teachers digital teaching and learning”.

The Ambassador explained that in September this year, the Forum on the China-Africa cooperation (FOCAC) summit was successfully held in Beijing and President Xi Jinping of China met with President Joseph Boakai, revealing that during the summit, China and Africa decided to join hands to advance modernization and build an All-Weather China-Africa community with a shared future.

According to him, China and Liberia entered a strategic partnership to translate these visions into reality, adding that measures will be taken that China and Africa will jointly implement the global civilization initiative, increase engagement and cooperation in education, youth and culture, strengthen cultural exchanges, and enhance people-to- people ties.
