GBARNGA July 27 (LINA) – Barely two days to the official celebration of Liberia’s 175th independence anniversary, inhabitants of Bong County have called on to be more tax compliant as they lavish praises on government for the level of stability in the Liberian economy.

« Unlike past governments, this Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC)-led government is carrying on massive development, including road connectivity from the little revenue generated as domestic tax that enters the national envelope, » said George Solo.

Mr. Solo, a famous barber and popular radio caller in Gbarnga, believes that Liberians should be grateful to the Almighty God as they begin celebrating the level of stability in the country following 14 years of brutal civil war.

As a renowned barber in the county, George Solo and several other inhabitants, including politicians, blamed the under-development of Liberia to lack of tax compliance by residents of the country, including private property owners, as well as most smallholder business people.

« This government is doing extremely well to build the country but how many people are really paying taxes to government? » he asked.

As he urged Liberians to be tax compliant, Solo cited several projects carried out by government, including the pavement of the Gbarnga-Mendikormah highway, Regional Cash Hub in Gbarnga and the payment of WASSCE fees for twelfth graders, despite low tax payment.

Solo was, at the same time, quick to point out that President George Manneh Weah has had no political prisoner in this country, despite the many criticisms by the opposition bloc, some of whom, according to him, who are in the diaspora continue causing problem for the country .

A smallholder agriculturist and resident of Gbarnga, Mr. Alfred Spencer, cited government’s housing unit project and road connectivity as among the many meaningful development initiatives milestone achievements by the CDC-led government.

« The best thing opposition can do is to rally around this government to bring development closer to the people and stop the many negative criticisms,” he said.

Mr. Spencer is also a popular radio talk show caller in Bong County who believes that the failure of opposition parties to work with government will drive away development.

In a related development, Mr. Peter Tele, the Political Consultant in the office of Bong County District #Two lawmaker, James Kolleh, has admitted that the CDC-led government is making significant impact in transforming the lives of the Liberian people.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, the Republic of Liberia will celebrate 175 years of independence since 1847.

On January 7, 1822, the first freed slaves from the United States of America landed on Providence Island in Monrovia, Montserrado County.

Following the Commonwealth period, which ran from 1822-1837, Liberia hoisted the red, white and blue national ensign, making it the first independent republic on the Continent of Africa.

The eleven stripes national flag was designed by seven females with Joseph Jenkins Roberts being the first elected president.
