MONROVIA, Sept.25 (LINA) – Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has reiterated calls to the international community to consider and provide more opportunities for girls and women around the world to break the barriers of discrimination and release women’s potential as leaders.

In an official tweet, Madam Sirleaf said: « I was pleased to attend the Teach For All People First Development event at the Ford Foundation and my message was simple and clear: ‘Give women and girls’ the leadership opportunities they deserve and let them take charge of building a fair and equal future. »

She highlighted that the future of development rests on the opportunities that can be offered to women and girls around the world, noting that they should participate fully in the decision-making processes that have the potential to shape their lives, communities, countries and the world at large.

Madam Sirleaf has always advocated for an increased participation of women and girls in leaderships across the globe.

She recently expressed delight and gratitude for female participation in leadership as she recently tweeted a congratulatory message to Liberia’s new Chief Justice, Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh.

« I extend my congratulations to Justice Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh on her new role as Liberia’s Chief Justice – the third woman in my country’s history to ascend to this leadership position as her nomination will inspire many African women to strive for justice and aspire to be leaders. »

It can be recalled that in August this year, President George Manneh Weah named Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh as Chief Justice of the nation’s top court, the first woman in the role since 2003.

Justice Yuoh was one of two female justices serving on the country’s Supreme Court bench after her appointment in 2013 by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as she was the third most senior justice at the country’s highest court.

She replaces Francis Korkpor, who retired pursuant to Article 72 (b) of the Constitution of Liberia, as he attained the age of 70 on September 5, 2022.

Ex-President Sirleaf is the first democratically-elected woman President in Africa, leading Liberia from 2006-2018 and a promoter of freedom, peace, justice, women’s empowerment and democratic rule.

She led Liberia through reconciliation and recovery following the nation’s decade-long civil war, as well as the Ebola Crisis.
