Kumasi, July 30. GNA – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), is sourcing funding from the private sector to complete the stalled New Tafo (Krofrom) market in Kumasi.
Mr. Osei Assibey- Antwi the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said this was being done through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, as well as the Ministry of Finance.
The facility, which started more than ten years ago, has been left uncompleted due to lack of funds.
The Assembly had written to the Ministry of Local Government, through the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to draw attention on the need to continue and complete work on the project.
Mr Assibey-Antwi, who was addressing the second ordinary meeting of the third session of the seventh Assembly in Kumasi, said with the creation of five new Municipal Assemblies out of the KMA, the assembly was left with fewer satellite markets to generate revenue.
The New Tafo market, he noted, which had more than 1000 stores and stalls was being given the needed attention to ensure early completion.
On the Kejetia/Central Market Re-development Project, the MCE hinted that provision had been made for the commencement of the second phase.
According to the 2018 budget statement, US$100,000,000 had been budgeted for the second phase.
Mr. Assibey-Antwi indicated that the Assembly, was therefore doing everything necessary to help the contractor to beat the deadline for accessing the funds for the project.
