Accra, June 18, GNA—Mr Henry Quartey, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, has called on the public to rally behind the government’s Green Ghana project.
He said the project was a collective responsibility for which concerted efforts were needed to address the degradation of Ghana’s forest reserves.
‘Trees benefit the society in immense ways hence the need for all to support the national tree planting exercise’, he said
Mr Quartey made the call when he led the staff of the Assembly to plant trees, at Madina on Wednesday.
The exercise was meant to complement the government’s efforts at greening the country through the planting five million trees on the maiden Green Ghana Day.
An initiative of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the National Tree Planting exercise was aimed at restoring destroyed vegetation and greening the country is part of a global effort to fight climate change.
Mr Quartey said trees were critical to man’s survival and expressed optimism that the project would help grow more trees in the country to help protect the environment and provide other economic benefits to human and society.
He implored the authorities to ensure that the trees were nurtured and closely monitored to grow in order to restore lost vegetation.
Mrs Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, the Municipal Chief Executive, expressed her delight the exercise saying it would help restore the lost lands.
‘The tree planting exercise would undoubtedly improve the quality of ,life of Ghanaians as well as contribute to the global reforestation efforts’, she added.
