Freetown, 5th September 2024 (SLENA)—The Minister of Employment, Labor, and Social Security, Mr Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has officially received the final valuation report on the proposed Informal Sector Scheme under the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT).

The scheme aims to extend social security coverage to Sierra Leone’s informal sector, which currently leaves 90% of the population uncovered.
The report, presented at the Freetown International Conference Center by the Director General of NASSIT, FuadDaboh, assesses the scheme’s financial sustainability and outlines critical recommendations for its design and implementation. The Informal Sector Scheme will provide retirement, disability, and survivorship benefits to IT, telecommunications, and digital service workers.
« This initiative is crucial to reducing vulnerability and building resilience in our informal sector, » said Minister Swaray.
The scheme is expected to be rolled out in the first quarter of 2025, following further discussions on implementation strategies and stakeholder endorsement.
