MOCI Expresses Concerns Over Expired Rice On Liberian Market, Warns Importers

MONROVIA, Oct. 31(LINA) –The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI) has expressed utmost concern over recent reports unearthing the presence of expired rice on the Liberian market as the Ministry sounds a warning to those allegedly smuggling the expired rice into the country.

According to a statement from the MOCI dated October 30, 2024, the Ministry warns those dealers to desist or they will face serious actions from the government, adding that it takes into serious consideration the matter and has launched a full investigation through the Inspectorate Division to examine these claims, particularly as it relates to certain importers and suppliers.

The statement added that the Ministry’s inspection teams are conducting rigorous checks to identify and remove any compromised products, assuring the public that all findings will be promptly and transparently shared.

« Anyone found to be responsible for distributing expired or contaminated goods will face the appropriate punitive measures in keeping with law. The MoCI is committed to enforcing the highest standards of consumer protection and safety », the communication cited.

It added: « Protecting the health and welfare of the Liberian people is our foremost priority, and we are taking strong measures to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of our inspection and oversight regime. We are dedicated to holding importers, wholesalers, and retailers accountable, ensuring that only safe, high-quality products reach our citizens ».

At the same time, the MoCI calls on all Liberians to join the Ministry in the process by reporting any expired or suspicious products found on the market to its offices or through designated hotlines.

The dispatch further noted: « Together, we can maintain a safer, healthier market for all Liberians. The Ministry is unwavering in its commitment to consumer safety and will continue to work tirelessly to safeguard the quality of goods »
