Rome, 26/02/2024 (MAP) – In an unprecedented move, Morocco has been unanimously elected to the presidency of the Executive Board of the World Food Programme (WFP) for the year 2024. The decision was made during the first regular session of the Council, held from February 26 to 28 at the WFP headquarters in Rome.

The election of Morocco, represented by Ambassador Youssef Balla, the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the United Nations agencies in Rome, marks the first time in the history of the UN humanitarian organization that Morocco will preside over the Executive Board, consisting of 36 members. This significant achievement highlights the confidence placed by the international community and African nations in Morocco’s leadership in the crucial areas of food security and the fight against hunger on both regional and global fronts.

Morocco, a member of the Board since December 2020, has previously held the position of Vice-President of the Council. Additionally, the country serves as the coordinator of African countries within the Council’s Bureau, showcasing its active and influential role within the organization.

The election comes at a pivotal moment, characterized by a surge in humanitarian crises worldwide, ongoing structural reforms within the agency, and a concerted effort to mobilize financial resources. This collective push aims to empower the WFP to respond more effectively to the escalating humanitarian needs around the globe.

The WFP, with its mission to eradicate global hunger, focuses on providing emergency food assistance to save lives during humanitarian crises. Simultaneously, it implements long-term development programs to support countries affected by the impacts of climate change.

Morocco’s presidency of the WFP Executive Board for 2024 reflects a commitment to addressing the pressing issues of food security and hunger, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to contributing solutions on the international stage. As the world grapples with increasing challenges, Morocco’s leadership position signifies a strategic and collaborative approach to tackling global humanitarian concerns.
