Lisbon, 12/12/2024 (MAP) – The joint bid by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup is a historic proposal that will serve the interests of global football, stated the President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), Fernando Gomes.
« The confirmation of the selection of our bid for the 2030 World Cup is a decision that honors our history, recognizes our organizational capacity, and rewards the boldness of a transcontinental and multicultural candidacy, » he declared during the FIFA Congress, which convened on Wednesday for an extraordinary session via videoconference.
« We have reached the final stage of this joint bid. Morocco, Portugal, and Spain have presented a multicultural, multilingual, and multi-geographical candidacy. This bid is historic—not only in material terms but also in the principles we aim to establish and leave as a legacy for the future, » Gomes continued.
« There is no better opportunity than the World Cup to promote diversity, inclusion, human rights as a foundation and pillar of the competition, and sustainability as a declared goal,” he added.
“We want to reach new levels in environmental efforts. By combining all these aspects, we will promote and care for the most globalized sport on the planet! Let us celebrate the history of the tournament while safeguarding its future and modernization, » Gomes emphasized.
The Portuguese official further noted that this selection represents « a historic moment that will allow Portugal to join the select group of countries proud to have hosted the FIFA World Cup, » expressing pride in this selection, which reflects the seriousness and responsibility of the three countries in tackling such a challenge.
On Wednesday, Morocco, Portugal, and Spain were officially designated by the FIFA Congress as the host countries for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
During the session, presided over by FIFA President Gianni Infantino from Zurich, Congress members also approved the allocation of three centennial matches in 2030 to Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, while Saudi Arabia was confirmed as the host nation for the 2034 World Cup.
