Public education on Public Education: Education is the Key to transforming lives- from the village to New York

(SLENA, 3rd August, 2022).This is not the first time I’ve been engaged in bringing young Africans from very rural or economically challenging backgrounds to places beyond their wildest dreams. I’ve hosted Sierra Leonean youth at Harvard and MIT and helped Kenyans get into Harvard and beyond… all through their own diligence and hard work.
But I think my favorite is about to happen. On my delegation to the upcoming UN where Sierra Leone is Co-Chair of the Transforming Education Summit Advisory Group, I decided to include three students. One is on the Youth Advisory Group to the Ministry. She participated remotely in the Paris Pre-Summit. I then asked my team to find me the top two female candidates in last year’s BECE Junior Secondary School transition exam from Falaba and Pujehun Districts (these two struggle on female transition levels). We need to inspire a revolution in our rural communities.
Two names were sent to me within minutes. My Deputy Directors in the Districts went hunting for the students. These girls both, on opposite ends of the country, live in rural communities where a motorbike was the best way to access. In one of their communities, everyone had gone to the farm when the DDE arrived. They live in mud houses. They don’t have passports and certainly have never been to the city. But we will take them to New York City where they’ll meet world leaders. Why? Because of education. Theirs and our lives will never be the same and we hope that this leaves a window of opportunity to transform not just their own lives but to inspire any child in Sierra Leone that no matter who they are or where they live or which farm they work on, with quality education, they could just change their lives and their country.
It’s been beautiful to see community members step in to support these girls. It is all of our responsibilities to ensure we support education.
There used to be a past where these opportunities were given to children of corrupt politicians. There used to be a time when only those in Freetown knew about these opportunities. There used to be a time when data wasn’t the source for these opportunities. That time was then… not now.
As for my other staff joining, the School Quality Assurance Officer joining our delegation is the one who performed the best in her work (about 2x the next person) as captured on our dashboard. I am so so proud of my team.
Now, let’s get them visas and go wow the world
