Accra, May 31, GNA – Mr Seth Appau, the Head of Technical Examination Unit at the Ghana Education Service (GES), has said the panacea for youth unemployment is prioritising skill-based training to meet the needs of the ever-changing industry.
He said the current challenge of the Ghanaian society was not unemployment but non-availability of skilled and employable workforce that would deliver to the expectation of the employer.
He, therefore, called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders in the education sector to equip trainees with the relevant entrepreneurial skills to improve productivity.
Mr Appau said this at the fourth graduation ceremony of the GH Media School in Accra on the theme: « Skill-Based Training – The Panacea to Youth Unemployment ».
He noted that the theoretical training bequeathed to the nation by the colonial masters had been the bane for youth employment; hence the government’s resolve to pursue competency-based training to address the unemployment situation.
Mr Appau said the essence of education was to develop a well-grounded individual who is competent enough to solve societal challenges through application of knowledge and, therefore, commended the founding fathers of the institution for establishing the School to train the youth in employable skills.
Seventy-one students graduated with Diploma in Journalism and Media Studies, Integrated Marketing Communications and Television and Film Production.
The GH Media School was established in 2013 with 13 students and currently boasts of 950 students.
Mr Leslie Addo Listowell, the Rector of the School, in his welcoming address, said the institution had emerged as a brand of choice for prospective students in view of its practical oriented training that equipped students with skills that would enabled them to establish their own businesses after training.
He said 70 per cent of the institution’s training was practical with 30 per cent theory aimed at equipping students with the relevant skills and tools to excel in the competitive media industry.
« Our attitude, skill and knowledge model of training, coupled with our core values of passion, professionalism and progressiveness are the very foundation on which our students and graduates have become relevant, competitive and competent in their chosen fields of work, » Mr Listowell said.
Students who excelled in their respective programmes were rewarded with certificates and Ms Eze Chioma Victoria was adjudged the Overall Best Student.
