Tamale, June 13, GNA – Some students in the Nanton District of the Northern Region have called on the government to print more copies of the 1992 Constitution and distribute them freely among them.
They said the Constitution was uncommon to them and distributing it to the schools would help the students to appreciate its contents to inform their lives.
The students made the call at separate fora organised at their schools by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to engage them as part of the Citizenship Week celebration.
The Citizenship Week celebration is an annual event of the NCCE to interact with the citizenry, especially school children to inculcate in them the spirit of oneness, nationalism and patriotism.
The Nanton District Directorate of the NCCE engaged 12 junior high schools (JHS) and 18 primary schools in the district, including Jana JHS and Primary, Fazihin JHS and Primary, Tinkurugu JHS and Primary, Nanton JHS and Primary, Zieng JHS and Primary as part of the celebration.
The students and pupils suggested that the Constitution should be made an examinable subject by the West Africa Examinations Council, saying that would compel them to learn and know the Constitution very well.
They further suggested that the NCCE should be allocated a period in their schools to regularly teach them about the Constitution to enhance their knowledge.
Mr Ibrahim Iddrisu, Nanton District Director of NCCE, who led the staff of the NCCE to visit the schools for the exercise, took the students and pupils through portions of the Constitution that emphasised unity, tolerance and patriotism and advised them to be good and responsible citizens.
He gave pocket-size copies of the Constitution to some of the students.
Meanwhile, the Nanton District Directorate of the NCCE also engaged nine youth groups in four communities in the area as part of the Constitution Week celebration, where it discussed issues such as the history of the country, unity, rule of law amongst others.
The youth groups included Aluti, Timtooni, Nayilifong, Kambontoni, Bikaritimilabi, Nasara, from Nanton, Zieng, Tampion and Zoonayili communities.
The Constitution Week celebration is an annual event of the NCCE to commemorate the 1992 referendum when the citizenry voted to adopt the 1992 Constitution as part of the country’s return to a constitutional democratic rule.
