UN: Angola addresses peace, security in Great Lakes

Luanda – Angolan minister of Foreign Affairs Téte António has discussed the issues related to the peace and security in the Great Lakes Region, with stress to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Central African Republic (CAR).

A press note from Angola’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that Téte António held a courtesy meeting at the UN Headquarters with the UN Under-Secretary General for Political and Peace building Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo.

The interlocutors also addressed the process of mediation of the dispute between Rwanda and DRC, with focus on the trips of the Angolan President, João Lourenço, to Kinshasa (DRC) and Kigali (Rwanda) cities to talk with his counterparts.

They also discussed the meeting the president João Lourenço held with the leaders of the Great Lakes region in Washington, on the sidelines of the US-Africa summit.

Rosemary DiCarlo took over the position of UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs on May 1, 2018.

She is assistant to the UN Secretary-General for global peace and security matters, in addition to overseeing the electoral assistance, provided annually by the United Nations to its Member States.

Téte Antonio also met with the permanent representative of China to the UN, Zhang Jun, with whom he discussed the support of the members of the United Nations Security Council for the Ad-Hoc verification mechanism.

The agenda also includes meeting with the permanent representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, Vassily A. Nebenzia.
