MONROVIA, June 28 (LINA) -Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has commended the Liberia News Agency (LINA) for the hard work it has exhibited over the years for the betterment of Liberia.

“A few months ago, I saw a story from Kwame (LINA Director General) about this community in Kpelleh Town. The story was about this old lady who is a widow and also lost all of her children during the Liberian civil war,” VP Howard-Taylor recalled.

“Thank you Kwame for raising this very important human story. There are many like this across the country,” the VP said.

The Liberian Vice President maintained that the podcast from the Director General of LINA led her to intervene in the little way she could by constructing a one- bedroom apartment for the widow.

Speaking at the dedication of the project Monday, Madame Howard –Taylor said, the old lady could be her grandmother, who died during the civil war due to her inability to flee the town when others were running for safety.

“She could be my grandmother. My grandmother died during the war because she could not walk. When the war came and everybody was running she was left behind,” VP Howard-Taylor remembered.

Madam Howard-Taylor disclosed that she has special affinity for elderly people who don’t have any means to survive.

Madam Howard-Taylor urged the public to take time and reflect on the negative impact the civil war has had on Liberia, citing that everybody has their own story of the war because everybody in Liberia has been affected by the war somehow.

“Sometimes, we need to take time and look at what have happened to others, because every family has been affected by the war,” VP Howard-Taylor emphasized.

Also, the Liberian VP lauded community dwellers who have been helpful for the upkeep of the old lady, stating “Good never lost.”

Meanwhile, the dedication of the one-room apartment by the VP was followed by the donation of assorted items, including seven bags of 25-kg rice and cash amounting to twenty thousand Liberian dollars for the upkeep of the old lady.

Upon receiving the house key and donation, old mom Yata Kerkulah thanked the Vice President for the kind gesture in such a time.

“May God bless you for coming to my rescue, different woman born you to be my daughter, I am so happy for this day,” Ma Yata stated.

Also speaking, Saturday Bargbah, who has been the caretaker of Yata Kerkulah applauded the VP and the Director General of LINA, for the initiative, stating: “Thank you to everybody that came here today.”

According to Bargbah the Old Lady came to his place overnight requesting him to allow her to sleep for the night and from that day has she refused to go home.

Bargbah narrated that the Lady explained that she lost her children and husband during the war, and she doesn’t have any one to take care of her and as such she want to stay with his family, something he accepted.

The Liberia News Agency has undergone huge reform under the leadership of Director Kwame Oldpa Weeks, which has seen the introduction of a live feed that puts spotlight on societal issues, ranging from health, abandonment, drug addiction to rape, among others.
