Liberia: Senate Commits To Addressing Health Constraints Via Budgetary Allotments

Monrovia, March 20 (LINA) – The President Pro-tempore of the Liberian Senate, Albert Chie, has pledged the Senate’s commitment to solving constraints in the country’s health sector through adequate budgetary appropriation.

Chie observed that ‘early diagnosis leads to adequate treatment’ and that one of the major ways of preventing diseases as well as fatalities is for a nation to have a robust health sector.

He made the comments in Monrovia over the weekend at the funeral service of the deceased Montserrado County Senator, Geraldine Doe-Sheriff.

Chie believes that if Liberia was well equipped with a vigorous health system their fallen colleague (Doe-Sheriff) would not have traveled to the United States, India and Ghana to seek medical attention.

He expressed dismay over the fact that the Legislature, particularly the Liberian Senate, has lost a strong brain, freedom fighter and someone who never fell short of victory while on a political battlefield.

Chea intoned that, if the nation’s health sector is prioritized, stakeholders, politicians and other well-meaning Liberians will not also have to travel abroad to seek medical treatment, adding that « there is a gap in the health sector that needs to be addressed through the national budget. »

He opined that the death of the Senator has also left a vacuum in the Liberia Senate that will be hard to fill with a similar quality.

« The country will not only remember the day you left this world, » Chie noted, stating that Senator Doe-Sheriff will also be remembered for her outstanding contributions to the Liberian society.

He recalled that the deceased Senator fought tirelessly to see the Senate become an efficient, productive and proactive body.

Also speaking at the occasion, former Pro-tempore Armah Jallah proposed to the National Legislature that the body establishes a legislative training institute that will be dedicated to training legislative staff.

As per his proposal, Jallah is entreating the body to name said institution in honor of the late Montserrado County Senator, Geraldine Doe-Sheriff.

Jallah said Liberians will always remember the fallen senator as one of the sponsors of legislation that will change the political landscape of the country.

« We both championed many issues geared towards the uplifting of our people as well as increasing the role of women in political governance and decision-making in Liberia. We lobbied together for the passage of the Affirmative Action law and the Domestic Violence Bill and if these bills are finally passed into law, history will always remember you (Doe-Sheriff), » Jallah emphasized.
