GBARNGA, July 21 (LINA) – The Principal of the William R. Tolbert Public School in Gbalatua, Zota District, Bong County, has called on the Ministry of Education to urgently renovate the school before August this year.
Speaking to reporters in the district Monday, Mr. Gordon Weh expressed fear that if nothing is done urgently to renovate their school before administering this year’s West African Examination Council (WAEC) test, the Gbalatua rural center will not be ready for use..
Mr. Weh disclosed that the school is one of the major rural centers in Bong County that hosts over 1,500 senior students during the administering of the West African Secondary School Certificate Exams (WASSCE) in the country.
According to him, since the building was hit by a violent storm in June this year, the facility has been leaking, while some parts of the structure are uncovered due to lack of zinc and other materials to re-roof the building.
The Principal expressed fear that the West African Examination Council (WAEC) might find difficulty in relocating thousands of students who are required to write the 2020 WASSCE Exams in Zota District because nearly all the structures in the town were affected by the storm.
In June this year, a raging storm left over 3,000 residents homeless in Gbalatua Township when the wind unroofed over 100 houses, including both public and private buildings hosting clinics and schools.
Following the incident, some county officials, including lawmakers, made some interventions to rescue victims who were sleeping outdoors because they were being rejected by neighbors in observance of health protocols linked to the corona virus, including social distancing.
Meanwhile, Mr. Weh has stressed the need for government through the Ministry of Education to urgently renovate the facility before the WASSCE Exams in August this year.
Since the pronouncement by the Education Ministry to reopen schools across the country to prepare senior students for the WASSCE Exams,, Bong County Education Officer Rev. Armah N. Varfee has uncompromisingly compelled school administrators to make sure that their senior students regularly attend classes.
