MONROVIA, July 24 (LINA)- The President and Chief Patron of Sports, Dr. George Manneh Weah has dedicated the modernized Clara Town Sports Pitch now called « Clara Town Survivors Sports Park, urging residents to maintain the facility and opening it up to everyone for recreation.
The Sports Park covers an area a little over 1.6 acres and was famously called Clara Town Field where the former Ballon ‘dOr winner, and now Chief Patron Sports began his soccer career playing for Young Survivors in Clara Town before making his way outside Liberia and achieving a most prestigious awards in soccer.
President Weah had given the facility a facelift and encouraged residents to ensure proper maintenance for its longevity.
The Liberian leader urged the citizens to see the Clara Town Survivors Sports Park as their own because he will not be the one to tell the people how to treat the facility for its upkeep.
« To the people of Clara Town, I want to say to youthat these facilities are for you and I want you to take good care of them. I will not come here to tell you how to treat them. These are yours and you deserve them. I do not want to see fighting over this park because this place is meant to accommodate everybody, » President Weah noted.
He said the park should be open to everybody at all times, adding that no one must be seen fighting or carrying on violence at the facility and those that are responsible to take care of the playground must ensure everybody is given equal opportunity.
President Weah recalled that when they were growing up in Clara Town, the youths had several difficulties ranging from lack of recreational areas to play, but some of them were able to navigate their way and survive.
“Today, some of us are ministers, directors, politicians, lawmakers and president. Therefore, I have come to give back to the community because it has survived.
« My people of Clara Town, they say I know nothing but I have done something. As we have come to enjoy, let’s boil, » President Weah said.
For his part, the President of Liberia Football Association, Mustapha Raji exhorted President Weah for being so developmental, especially in the sporting sector where Liberians are now having the opportunity to explore their talents through several sporting activities.
The developments under taken by the Liberian leader, Raji said, afford the young ones in Clara Town to play and realize their full potential.
Commenting on the history of the « Clara Town Survivors Sports Park,” the Minister of State without Portfolio, Trokon Kpui, said the project was done under the President’s Project Delivery Unit, and it is situated on a little over 1.6 acres of land.
The Minister extended thanks and appreciation to the people of Clara Town and Doe Community for being supportive during the entire project.
He observed that Clara Town will not be the end of such projects as the President’s Project Delivery Unit is currently in New Kru Town working on the D. Twe Sports Field.
The Clara Town Survivors Sports Park consists of a soccer pitch, basketball court, children playground, locker rooms, office and other essential components for public use.
