Accra, Aug 5,GNA – Mrs Patty Assan, the Municipal Director of Education, La Nkwantanang has urged parents to let their children, know right from childhood, the importance of education in life to prepare their minds for better academic works in school.
She said education was indispensable if parents wanted their children to achieve academic excellence in future, and appealed to them to play a key role in the development of their Children’s education.
« Education prepares children to solve basic problems in life and to be able to fit well into the society, education should help the child as an individual to identify and understand his or her uniqueness ».
Mrs Assan said this at the weekend at the graduation ceremony of Tot To Teen School Limited, where the students graduated from Pre-school to Primary, Primary to Junior High School (JHS) and JHS to Senior High School.
The ceremony was on the theme ‘Pursuing Academic Excellence through Holistic and Qualitative Education’.
She said holistic education was based on the principle that « each person finds identity, meaning, and purpose in life through connections to the community, to the natural world, and to humanitarian values such as compassion and peace. »
Mrs Assan commended parents for committing to the education of students from diverse backgrounds, to achieve excellence, in their intellectual and personal development, and m providing a safe and stimulating environment.
She said it was imperative for parents to ensure that their wards acquire academic excellence through holistic and qualitative education, for a brighter future.
« Academic Excellence through holistic and qualitative education makes us mentally strong, by increasing our understanding and knowledge levels on a wide range of issues ».
She advised parents to secure their children’s future and protect them against bad friends and negative societal influences.
She stated that it was incumbent on parents to encourage and support their wards’ learning activities at home, since parental involvement in school was also critical in their academic success.
« Research has shown that family engagement in schools improves students’ achievement, reduces absenteeism and restores parental confidence in their wards education ».
Mr Emmanuel Kwesi Arkyin-Quansah, the Headmaster of Tot To Teen School said the school started with only three pupils and now had a population of over 800 in the various departments.
He said the school had the state of the art computer laboratory, a library and home economics books and had also chalked 100 per cent passes for a decade.
The Headmaster said the school’s Girls’ Guide Choir, Spelling Bee and the debating programmes benefited the school immensely from the leadership shown by the contestants.
He said the emphasis placed on academic excellence, personal integrity and service had been the driving force behind the school’s strategic agenda.
Mr Arkyin-Quansah expressed concern about the late payment of fees, poor attendance to PTA meetings, among others, which affected both the school and the child’s academic work.
He commended the PTA for their active role they played in the provision of furniture, white boards, markers and dusters to aid teaching and learning.
Dr Irene Agyepong Amarteyfio, the Executive Director said the ceremony was the first ever speech and prize giving day of the school, and pledged to make it an annual event to recognise the efforts of students who have excelled in their various subjects.
She urged the students to continue to work hard and justify the investments made on them by their parents.
The Pre-school graduands and the JHS graduands were presented with certificates.
The ceremony witnessed a cultural performances, choreography, modelling and poem recitation by the students.
