Accra, July 22, GNA- Nigeria and FC Barcelona Femeni star, Asisat Oshoala walked away with the 2022 Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Women’s Player of the Year award, recording an enviable five-time glory.
She beat off competition from Ajara Nchout Njoya (Cameroon & Internazionale Milano) and Grace Chanda (Zambia & BIIK Kazygurt) to bag the coveted trophy at a glittering function held in the Moroccan capital of Rabat on Thursday night.
The clinical finisher now overtakes her compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha who claimed it four times, to stand alone as a record five-time winner of the African Player of the Year accolade.
In the 2021/22 season, Oshoala played a vital role in her club’s success, winning the treble- the Spanish Women’s Super Cup, Copa de la Reina and the Primera Division.
Despite missing some matches for her club due to injury, the 27-year-old managed to net 20 goals in 19 matches in the Primera Division to emerge as joint-top goal scorer with Madrid CFF’s Geyce Ferreira and four goals in nine appearances in the UEFA Women’s Champions league.
She led the Super Falcons of Nigeria to eliminate Ghana from qualifying to the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations ongoing in Morocco and also aided her side to pick a ticket to next year’s FIFA Women’s Cup of Nations in Australia.
Due to the inactivity of the Women’s national team in the year under review, the women’s National Team of the Year will be named after Saturday’s TotalEnergies Women’s Cup of Nations final between hosts Morocco and South Africa at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
