VOINJAMA, Jan. 25 (LINA) – Several citizens and residents of Lofa County are commending President George Manneh Weah for mandating the National Transit Authority, (NTA) to resume services across Liberia, including Lofa County.
The Lofains and local residents said the extension and resumption by the NTA of its services to the county is highly welcoming, noting that the decision by the President and NTA management to reach rural parts will help reduce the high transportation fares travelers to and from the interior have to pay.
According to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) Correspondent, the Lofains and other local residents, blamed the Lofa County branch of the Federation of Road
Transport Unions (FRTUL), and commercial drivers for the hike in transportation fares, noting that despite the reduction in the prices of gasoline and fuel, the FRTUL and commercial drivers in Lofa County are still charging passengers exorbitantly.
“This,” according to them, “is very high is responsible for the hike in the prices of basic commodities in the county,” stressing that the resumption of NTA services to the county will help reduce transportation fares and the prices of basic goods and services.
Speaking recently in Voinjama City during an assessment tour, a team
of staff and engineers from the NTA revealed that the extension and resumption of NTA services to the counties is part of President Weah’s decentralization policy.
The team also disclosed that out of the 45 buses donated by the Indian government to the Liberian government, President Weah has mandated the NTA to use several of them for its services to the counties.
Meanwhile, the Lofains and residents are appealing to the leadership and the Legislative Caucus of Lofa County to buttress the President’s mandate and ensure that maintenance work is done on the Voinjama-Zorzor-Gbarnga road before the rainy season.
