StarTimes welcomes government measures to overhaul Ghana Football
Accra, June 8, GNA – StarTimes, a Chinese multinational media company and a major stakeholder in Ghana football has welcomed government’s decision to take steps to dissolve the Ghana Football Association (GFA), in a bid to overhaul the Association.
GFA has come under critical public scrutiny following an expose by undercover investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
In the expose dubbed ‘Number 12,’ a number of football officials and administrators were caught on tape taking money from individuals to help tilt the scale of justice to favour of the individuals paying the money.
Following the public outcry and shock at the content of the expose, the government has taken steps to dissolve the GFA, hence stopping any football related activity in the country.
A major investor to Ghana Football, StarTimes has explained that, they welcome the decision as long as it was for the greater good of Ghana Football.
Ms Akorfa Djankui, Head of Marketing at StarTimes told the GNA Sports in an interview that, the stoppage of football activities would disrupt their programmes, but nonetheless admitted that her outfit were happy as long as it would bring sanity into the game.
« I think everybody is shocked with this expose. There has been rumours over malpractices in Ghana football and we have finally been presented with evidence.
« This would take us back because we were preparing for the second round of the league. It would definitely disrupt our activities.
However, we support the government’s decision, we believe is for a good course and we support the measures that are being taken to overhaul our football, » Ms Djankui said.
« I know everybody is shocked with the expose, however we at StarTimes stand by the government’s decision and we think everybody should remain calm for the government to show the way forward. »
StarTimes have a ten year broadcasting deal with the GFA worth over $17 million.
