Luanda, 28 November (ANGOP) – The Republic of Angola has prepared two tariff offers to initiate the reduction (total reduction or withdrawal) of customs duties to operate in the SADC Free Trade Zone.
By the first quarter of 2020, Angola will begin discussions on the dismantling of customs duties, according to guarantees given Wednesday by the Minister of Commerce, Joffre Van-Dunem, to the MPs of the National Assembly’s Committee on Economy and Finance, while meeting the Economic team as part of the discussion of the draft State Budget 2020.
For this operation, Angola has prepared two offers, one for South Africa covering the SACCO region, which is the largest customs union, covering South Africa, Botswana and Namibia itself. The other offer is linked to other SADC member states.
This differentiation aims to protect national production, taking into account the advanced stage of South Africa, vis-à-vis other countries in the region.
« We are able to present our decommissioning and at the same time start and protect national production, » said the minister.
This tariff offer has not yet been delivered to the competent authorities at the regional level, as it is waiting for the republication of the 2017 Customs Tariff, which had all the products of the basic basket with zero rate.
